Texas QB Poised For Breakout Senior Season
By: Brian Watson

A state known for its rich football history and tradition of supremacy, Texas has consistently proved to be one of the dominant forces in high school football each year. Playing in one of the more difficult Districts, The Woodlands have posed as a consistent contender in Houston’s competitive 15-5A football. The Highlanders have advanced to the post-season for the 13th straight year, a streak eclipsed by only five High Schools in the entire state of Texas.

With a vacancy at quarterback next year, The Woodlands put the offense in the hands of 2009 sleeper, Andy McCloud. After anxiously waiting within the Highlanders program for this opportunity, the rising senior is primed for a breakout season and intent on carrying on the schools winning tradition.

For being just a high school, The Woodlands is larger than many college campuses in this country. With a 3800 + enrollment in grades 9-12, seizing a starting spot on the varsity roster is no easy task. So as those who came before him have done, McCloud was forced to work his way up through the junior high and JV ranks before getting his shot.

From the day he earned the starting spot outright as a junior high player, McCloud has never turned back. The budding prospect demonstrated he is a proven winner by steamrolling through the competition en route to a 42-1-1 record as starting quarterback. Having gained the recognition, respect, and trust from coaches, teammates, and fans; McCloud is aiming to pile up several additional wins to his already impressive resume.

Fresh off a successful JV season of completing 135/191 passes for 2155 yards and 16 touchdowns; McCloud is poised to show the country what he is capable of accomplishing at the varsity stage. Taking over a varsity team that finished 3-8 (2-3 District) last season makes it all the more challenging.

However, McCloud has more than proved to be capable of turning things around. The Highlander field general is a very accurate passer who shows a strong sense of timing and can effectively lead receivers on the run. Though most of his damage will be done through the air, McCloud’s 4.5 speed keeps opposing defenses at bay. Equipped with strong leadership, a hard work ethic, and the intelligence to handle adversity; the 6’2 190 Ib signal caller offers all the intangibles coaches desire in their starting quarterback.

When it comes to having a reliable pair of hands to throw to, McCloud will have two First Team All-District wide receivers in Alex Tweedy and Ryan Eastman at his disposal. Tweedy caught 48 passes for 768 yards and eight touchdowns while Eastman brought in 26 receptions for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Factor in rising junior Randy Knust (11 Rec. for 214 yards) and you’re facing 71% of the Highlanders receiving production from the 2007 season.

Turning to Steve Clarkson for guidance at the quarterback position indicates McCloud is taking all the necessary steps to reaching his full potential. Training alongside the best as well as learning from the best promises to provide him with all the tools for the highly anticipated varsity debut.

The 2008 season will surely give college coaches a clear indicator of where exactly to place the relatively unknown quarterback on their recruiting radar. If everything unfolds as we think it will, McCloud is in store for District dominance and will soon be a hot topic in recruiting talks.
