Montana Watch: Dylan Favre
By: Brian Watson

St. Stanislaus quarterback Dylan Favre – the nephew of NFL superstar Brett Favre – recently made history by becoming Mississippi’s all-time leader in single season passing touchdowns. Favre’s 45 touchdown passes puts him atop the state rankings and into the history books. While only in high school, its clear Dylan has learned a thing or two from his Uncle about breaking records

Dylan Favre, St. Stanislaus High School
The younger Favre surpassed the previous record of 42, set by North Panola’s Clifton Davis III in 1990 and matched by Jami Boland of Nettleton in 2006, to carve his name atop Mississippi’s all-time record book. He finished his record setting season 234-of-359 passing (65%) for 3790 yards and recorded an additional seven rushing touchdowns.

The St. Stanislaus Rock-a-Chaws rounded out their 2008 campaign with an 8-3 record and advanced into the Quarterfinal round of the Class 4A playoffs where they fell 42-27 to Bellhaven. If they had advanced another round, Favre would have had a legitimate chance at eclipsing the 4,032 single season passing yard record set by Marcus Thomas of Byhalia High School just last season.

Quarterbacking an offensive that heavily emphasizes the passing game has proved to be an ideal fit for Favre. As a sophomore, the young gunslinger passed for 3,092 yards and 36 touchdowns during his first year as the starting quarterback on varsity. Like his Uncle, the younger Favre is a fiery competitor with a win-at-all-cost mentality. He possesses superb field vision, has shown the ability to read defenses while going through his progression, and can make plays over the ground with his feet if need be.

The only thing holding Favre back is a characteristic he doesn’t have any control over, his height. At 5’10 180 lbs, the Mississippi native doesn’t fit the prototypical makeup of a Division I quarterback prospect. However, what the Rock-a-Chaw field general lacks in measurables he more than makes up for with his heart, competitive nature, and passion for the game of football.

When it comes to on-field production, Favre’s prosperous 2008 campaign has landed him on the national recruiting radar. Though the interest is only considered mild at this point, letters have arrived from programs across the country such as UCLA, Notre Dame, and Ole Miss. However, the early favorite in Favre’s recruiting, due to strong family ties, is Southern Mississippi. His father Jeff Favre and Uncle Brett are both alumni.

In honor of his record-setting season, DeBartolo Sports University is pleased to recognize Dylan as a candidate for the 2008 Joe Montana Quarterback of the Year Award. Favre joins fellow Mississippi nominees Tyler Russell (Meridian, Miss./Meridian), Chris Garrett (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo), and Clayton Moore (Louisville, Miss./Louisville) as candidates for the annual award.
