06/22/2008 – The wait is over! Sean Schroeder (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills) pledged a verbal commitment to Coach David Cutcliffe and the Duke Blue Devils coaching staff Sunday morning.

The decision marks the end of what was shaping up to be an agonizing recruiting process for the southpaw passer.

“The offer came out of the blue,” admits Schroeder. “I received an email from Duke on Friday night instructing me to call them the next day. So I called them Saturday night when I was up at the Stanford camp and they offered me over the phone. I told them that I needed a night to sleep on it and talk it over with my parents. The following morning (Sunday) I called them back with my decision to commit.”

An ACC program generating considerable buzz due to the recent shakeup in coaching personnel proved to be the deciding factor in Schroeder’s decision to become a Blue Devil.

“The combination of a top ten academic school, and the opportunity to work with Duke's new Head Coach, David Cutcliffe, a premier developer and mentor of quarterbacks (most notably the Manning brothers) was almost a no brainer for Sean in the decision process,” said Scott Schroeder (Sean’s father) through an emailed statement.

Also in pursuit of Schroeder were Boise State, Cal, Stanford, UCLA, Purdue, Colorado and Oregon State. Despite all the attention from other prominent programs, was Duke an ongoing favorite throughout his recruiting process? “Duke was always up there at the top,” admits Schroeder. “At the beginning of the recruiting process my family and I put together a list of schools to target. Duke was definitely in that list from the start. As I received more information from them and their recent addition of Coach Cutcliffe this past off-season, that made becoming a Blue Devil seem like a much greater opportunity for me.”

Schroeder’s first offer was long overdue. However, the rising senior remained patient and refused to get discouraged throughout the strenuous recruiting process.

“Obviously I was excited and thrilled when I heard the word ‘offer,’ admits Schroder. “It’s really a dream come true. I’ve been waiting to hear that word for a long time now. I’m just excited and kind of speechless at the same time. I don’t think its hit me just yet, but I’m really excited about it.”

Does this officially bring a close to Schroeder’s recruiting process or will he still listen to talk from other programs contemplating offering him a scholarship?

“I am one hundred percent a Blue Devil,” Schroeder firmly states. “Nothing is going to change that. I told both Coach Cutcliffe and Coach Roper (Offensive Coordinator) that if I was to verbally commit to a school then that is where I will end up going. I told them I would hold true to my word. I am going to attend Duke University and that’s official.”

Checking in at 6’3 185 lbs, Schroeder led the larger schools of Orange County in passing completion percentage (.667 %). His junior season performance earned him 2nd Team All-South Coast League honors.
