Tennessee wins Josh Nunes sweepstakes

06/25/2008 – The Tennessee Volunteers tapped into the rich talent pool of quarterbacks in the Golden State and came away with one of the gems in the 2009 class.

After much contemplation, Josh Nunes (Upland, Calif./Upland) officially brought his recruiting process to a close by expressing his intentions to head to the SEC and play for Coach Philip Fulmer and the Volunteers.

“There were a ton of factors involved in my decision to commit to Tennessee,” states Nunes. “A big part of it was the relationship I developed with their Offensive Coordinator, David Clawson. I really love Coach Clawson. He’s a great guy and I really like what’s already happening in the Volunteers program. Last year the line gave up about five sacks which was an NCAA record. They have some great recruits coming in already, and based on my research, and I’ve done a lot of research on a lot of schools, I feel that the area is a good fit for me.”

Nunes finds himself in an ideal situation by committing to a program that serves as a launching pad for quarterbacks hoping to reach the next level. Following in the footsteps of former Volunteer field generals Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts), Tee Martin (Pittsburgh Steelers), Casey Clausen (Kansas City Chiefs), and Erik Ainge (New York Jets), the Upland signal caller hopes to become the next great Tennessee quarterback to line up under center in Neyland Stadium.

“If you’re looking for the best chance to play in the NFL, Tennessee is a good place to be,” he exclaims. “I’ve had the opportunity to talk with Tee Martin as well as the Clausen family at Steve Clarkson’s Super 7 QB Retreat in Santa Barbara. The Clausens had nothing but positive things to say about Tennessee and what it was like to be a quarterback there. I’m really confident in what they have been able to tell me and it definitely helped me in my decision.”

After narrowing his initial list of potential suitors down to Arizona State, BYU, Florida, Harvard, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Stanford and Tennessee after Memorial Day weekend, trimming the list of eight schools down to one was not the easiest of decisions for Nunes.

“It was a tough decision and a lot of factors went into it but overall I just felt I had built up such a great comfort level with Tennessee,” admits Nunes. “I wanted to keep things rolling there and it just felt right to pull the trigger. Nothing against any of the other schools, but Tennessee is just a really great place and it just felt like it would fit me perfectly.”

With his future now squared away, the 6’4 205 lb passer is able to put one of the most agonizing decisions of his life behind him and shift his focus to family, Upland football, and Tennessee recruiting.

“My plans for the remainder of the summer are to continue working hard with my receivers at Upland and prepare for my senior season,” states Nunes. “I will definitely offer to help out however I can with the Tennessee recruiting as well. I’ve already started in on that. I may even visit the campus once more in July. It’s definitely going to be fun moving forward. I want to enjoy my last summer here with my family and my brother and continue to prepare for my senior season of high school football.”

After a noteworthy junior year, Nunes emerged as one of the best riflemen in the west. Quarterbacking Upland to a 7-4 record and a second place finish in the Baseline League, Nunes completed 124/216 passes for 2105 yards, and 18 total touchdowns (four rushing) while earning Co-League MVP honors.
