Two weeks removed from naming St. Bonaventure transfer-quarterback Tony Macarena as the opening day starter, Oaks Christian received news that Nicholas Montana, son of Hall-of-Fame quarterback Joe Montana, will be joining the Lions squad this week as the team continues to prepare for the upcoming 2008 campaign.
Nicholas, the younger of Montana’s two sons (oldest son Nate is a freshman quarterback at the University of Notre Dame) departs from De La Salle (Concord, Calif.), a program that utilized him primarily as a backup throughout the 2007 season.
A roster already including quarterbacks Macarena, Nick Isham, Jake Geringer, and Trevor Gretzky (son of Hall-of-Fame hockey legend, Wayne Gretzky) becomes more congested than ever before.
So how will Montana fare at Oaks? According to Steve Clarkson, his private quarterback instructor, Nicholas should settle in just fine at his new destination.
“I believe both Nicholas and the Montana family will be satisfied with their decision to enroll at Oaks Christian,” states Clarkson. “A program with a rich history of quality play from their quarterbacks makes for a perfect fit. He is aware of the competition that awaits him and understands playing time is something that must be earned. Nicholas is well equipped to take on the challenge necessary to win the starting spot.”
